REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — It is estimated that more than 3,000 people gathered to send Sinead O’Connor to her final resting place. O’connor has an Islamic funeral.
Those present in Sinead’s hometown, Dublin, Ireland, cried while singing “Nothing Compares to U”. The family of the singer who died at the age of 56 held a private memorial service on Tuesday (8/8/2023) morning which was attended by the President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins; and prime minister Leo Varadkar. Stars such as Bono, Edge and Bob Geldof also appeared to be in attendance.
The Chief Imam at the Islamic Center of Ireland, Sheikh Dr Umar Al-Qadri, said to Daily Mail that O’Connor would be given an Islamic funeral according to her conversion, referring to her by her new name, Shuhada Sadaqat.
“The funeral was obviously private (for) the family, and it was a very moving ceremony, and I think it really reflects Sinead’s beautiful personality. It is very spiritual and reflects his Irish identity as well as his Muslim identity,” said Sheikh Dr Umar al-Qadri.
He along with other members of the Muslim community performed the funeral prayer for O’Connor. He also said, O’Connor was never away from Allah SWT, unlike other people who have difficulties and trials in their lives.
“He is an extraordinary human being, not only a great musician, artist, but who will touch the hearts of millions because of his voice but also because of his extraordinary heart. He always had strong faith and belief in God,” said Sheikh Dr Umar al-Qadri.
He said O’Connor was gifted with a voice that moved generations of young people, and could move listeners to tears with the resonance of her world. O’Connor’s voice carried notes of hope for finding a way home.
“The Irish people have long found solace in song of suffering in these lower places, and Sinead was no exception, and in sharing that solace, she brought joy to many people around the world,” said Sheikh Dr Umar al- Qadri again.
