The sea of lights in Vienna was organized by the “#YesWeCare” initiative. With the Outer Castle Gate, the first federal building in Vienna was also clad in the Ukrainian national colors of blue and yellow.
“The war was on and it was relatively clear that we also wanted to do a ‘#YesWeCare’ for the situation in Ukraine,” said organizer Daniel Landau.
Loud protests too
He knows that many people in Ukraine are very aware of these signs around the world. The event is a protest, a call for peace, but also a clear sign that there is an aggressor. A police representative spoke to the APA of 7,000 participants.
Loud protests, especially from representatives of the Ukrainian community, mingled with silent expressions of solidarity. They had also brought numerous posters, including a daily one.
“Mrija”: Iconic plane destroyed
A young woman, for example, held up a box with the slogan “You may have destroyed our ‘Mrija’, but you will never destroy our dream”. On Sunday it became known that the world’s largest transport aircraft, a grounded Antonov An-225 ‘Mriya’, had been destroyed outside of Kyiv in the course of hostilities. “Mriya” is the Ukrainian word for “dream”.
Rallies in several state capitals
Demonstrations against the war and for solidarity with Ukraine were also held in other state capitals. In Salzburg there was a rally under the motto “against the war of aggression by Russian President Vladimir Putin” – more on this in Demonstration against “Putin’s war of aggression”. In Innsbruck, around 1,250 people had already protested peacefully against the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Saturday – more on that in Demos against the war in Ukraine.
In Vorarlberg, a peace rally took place in front of the Festspielhaus in Bregenz on Sunday evening. The city of Hohenems hoisted the Ukrainian flag on the Schlossplatz – more on that in Peace demonstration in Bregenz – Solidarity with Ukraine.
