Recently, a new discovery was made at a well-known archaeological site in a residential area of Lima, the capital of Peru: a 1,000-year-old mummy.

Archaeologists said the mummy was unearthed from the Puqueana site in the Miraflores district of central Lima, along with some ceramic containers, textiles and other artifacts.

The picture shows that the adult mummy has bent legs, long hair and a nearly well-preserved lower jaw.

According to experts, this mummy may have been made in the early days of the Ixma civilization 1,000 years ago. At the time, the Exmar civilization was in a period of social restructuring. This civilization originated in what is now the central coast of Peru, flourished from the 10th century to the 15th century, and was later absorbed and reorganized by the Inca Empire.

Famous for the ruins of the ancient Inca hilltop city of Machu Picchu, Peru was the birthplace of many indigenous Latin American cultures before it came under Spanish colonial rule. These cultures flourished in the centuries before the rise of the Inca Empire, mainly in the central coast of Peru and the Andes. (produced by Zhou Jing)
