– Thought it was a joke – VG

WARNING NORWAY: – To the Norwegian people I want to say that you must understand what kind of country you are dealing with. It is a country that engages in state terrorism, and with a president who is Putin’s friend, says the Swedish politician Amineh Kakabaveh.

Member of Parliament Amineh Kakabaveh goes hard after the Turkish ambassador first said he wanted her extradited to Turkey – before he later denied that this was the case.

On Friday, Turkey’s ambassador to Sweden, Hakki Emre Yunt, accused several Swedish politicians of being affiliated with the Kurdish Workers’ Party PKK, which is categorized as a terrorist group in Turkey, the EU and the United States.

He pointed the finger at Member of Parliament Amineh Kakabaveh, saying he wanted her extradited to Turkey.

– When I heard about it, I thought it was a joke. But that says a lot about what kind of country Turkey is and what the regime is like. It has gone too far, says Amineh Kakabaveh to VG on Friday night.

But a few hours later came the counter message:

The Turkish ambassador subsequently denied that he wanted extradition. He said that it was all a misunderstanding – and that the Swedish politician is not standing on the list of persons Turkey demands extradition.

However, Kakabaveh does not believe this is the truth.

– Turkey knows that they have the eyes of the whole world on them, and that they are fooling themselves. I do not think it was a misunderstanding, but that someone has asked him to withdraw it, she says.

Requires “terrorists” extradited

The background is that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has temporarily blocked Swedish and Finnish membership in NATO, because he claims that the countries are «Free ports for terrorists».

All 30 NATO countries must approve new members of the defense alliance, and now diplomacy is working in high gear to find a solution.

Turkey has addressed a number of demands to Sweden and Finland. Among other things, they demand the extradition of 33 people who will be connected to the PKK and the Gülen movement.

Turkey and the PKK have been at war since 1984. In the shadow of the Ukraine war, Turkey has this spring launched a large-scale military offensive against the group.

– No affiliation with the PKK

Kakabaveh is a Swedish citizen and has lived in Sweden since the nineties, but was born in Iranian Kurdistan. She denies having any affiliation with the PKK.

– I have nothing to do with Turkey and the PKK. I work for the rights of the Kurds, the rights of women. It does not matter where they are.

Kakabaveh is non-partisan, but cast the last vote for Magdalena Andersson as prime minister in November, after she had reached an agreement with the Social Democrats. The agreement involved a collaboration with the PYD, the largest political party of the Syrian Kurds.

An armed branch of the PYD, called the YPG, was the West’s ally in the fight against IS in Syria. Turkey equates the YPG with the PKK – which is classified as a terrorist organization.

The Swedish politician claims that the Turkish president is systematically racist against Kurds.

– The whole world knows that Erdogan has sat at the same negotiating table as the PKK. Turkey refers to all other voices for a democratic Turkey and for the rights of the Kurds to terrorists.

– Erdogan is chasing people because of their ethnic background. What this despot is doing is racism against an entire ethnic group.

Warns Norway

Kakabaveh further says that it is worrying that the NATO countries and the EU do not show a clearer opposition to Erdogan’s demands.

– As long as it does not happen, he will continue, she claims.

– To the Norwegian people, I want to say that you must understand what kind of country you are dealing with. It is a regime that engages in state terrorism, with a president who is Putin’s friend.

– Do you fear that Sweden will give in to Turkey’s demands to gain access to NATO, and that life for Kurds in Sweden may thus become more demanding?

– I really hope not. It would be scandalous if Sweden allowed Erdogan’s demands. It’s a total trampling.

– But life is already more difficult for Kurds in Sweden. Many call me and are restless.
