Those who fail the language test will have to leave Latvia

The measure of the Latvian authorities may apply to persons who do not register for the Latvian language exam and who do not submit any documents for the extension of the permanent residence permit. According to information obtained by SIA from Russian websites, about 6,000 people are in danger of being expelled from Latvia because they do not have a language certificate.

In such a case, 3 months will be given to leave the country so that the person can do it without haste. There is no criminal liability for refusal to comply with the requirements, but there is administrative liability – the citizen may be fined. Maris Kučinskis, the head of the Latvian Ministry of Internal Affairs, said earlier that the police will not prosecute anyone, as it is not known how this will happen in reality.

“The law provides for expulsion. If politicians or ministers say it won’t happen… It’s a hope that something will change in the legislation. But I’m afraid it won’t happen before September 1.”

This was stated by Ingmar Lidak, head of the Latvian Sejm’s citizenship, migration and social unity commission.
