The upcoming academic year for young people, especially those going to study in another city in Lithuania, is associated with many matters that need to be sorted out. Among them, it is usually remembered only when sick, although one of the most important tasks is to sign up at a medical facility where you can get free treatment. It’s a good idea to do this now, before or just after the start of the school year, when the pace picks up.

Pupils of Lithuanian vocational schools and students of higher education institutions, studying according to the programs of the permanent study form, are insured with state funds. Like all insured persons, it is paid from the Mandatory Health Insurance Fund family doctor services they can only receive treatment at the institution where they are registered.

Choose a city

“Young people studying in another city of Lithuania can remain registered and use the services of a family doctor free of charge in their previous medical institution, which is located in their hometown or in the city where they previously lived. However, the situation when a family doctor is needed due to an unexpected illness or, for example, a medical certificate, and he provides services in another city, is not the most convenient. Therefore, it is good to consider the possibility of re-registering at a treatment facility in the city of study”, explains Viktorija Klinavičienė, advisor of the Resident Services Department of the Vilnius Territorial Hospital Fund.

Thus, young people are advised to consider the availability of medical care, as well as the distance, travel costs and time required for it each time they travel to another city. If the distance is short, it may be convenient to stay after signing up and receive treatment in your hometown, and if it is longer, it is rational to sign up for studies at a medical institution in the city.

Choose a treatment facility

After deciding on a city, or if you want to change the treatment facility in the same city, you should choose a polyclinic, family medical center or clinic, ideally one that is easily accessible and close to your actual place of residence.

V. Klinavičienė points out that the insured can receive free family doctor services in a medical institution of their choice, but only in one. It can be both public and private – the most important thing is that this medical institution has a contract with the health fund for the services of a family doctor. The list of the country’s medical facilities and the services they provide is published on the website of the health insurance fund (you need to select the “family doctor” service).

Sign up at the medical facility

After deciding to change the treatment facility, the next step is to register in it. Upon arrival at the reception of the selected family medical institution, the prescribed forms are filled out request, a family doctor is chosen, together with a mental health center and a psychiatrist in the same or another medical institution. If a mental health center and a psychiatrist are not selected, the person is automatically assigned to the mental health center that has a contract with the selected treatment facility. When signing up at a medical facility, you must have an identity document with you.

The request can also be submitted electronicallyensuring confirmation of personal identity, as well as by mail or by courier, attaching a copy of the personal identity document.

The processing of registration documents in medical institutions costs 0.29 euros. If you transfer to another institution within 6 months of enrollment, you will be charged 2.90 euros for processing enrollment documents and forwarding medical documents (this fee does not need to be paid for young people who have come to study in another city or have returned to their permanent place of residence).

Get treatment where you signed up

As soon as a person registers in a new medical institution, he is automatically removed from the previous one. Therefore, a student enrolled in a city medical institution is free of charge family doctor services will only receive it there, and no longer at the previous treatment facility.
