The coach of the Italian national team Franco Smith has called up 34 players (33 + 1 invited) in view of the blue autumn. A list that presents 8 possible rookies, three among the forwards and five among the backs. To underline the presence of Stephen Varney, Gloucester scrum-half born in 2001 who had already dressed the blue, albeit of Under 20 and Under 18 – also contested by England and Wales, after a great season finale in the Premiership with the ‘Cherry and Whites’ -, and the presence of Benetton Rugby winger Monty Ioane is confirmed (the latter was included in the guest list, as three years have not yet passed since his professional landing in Italy). Together with the two of them they could wet their international debut also the hooker Gianmarco Lucchesi, the second line Riccardo Favretto and the third Giovanni Pettinelli, the opening halfback Paolo Garbisi and the trocar Fedrico Mori and Jacopo Trulla.

In addition to Varney, there are three other players who play in foreign leagues, namely teammate Jake Polledri, Matteo Minozzi of Wasps and Pietro Ceccarelli, who is finding space in Brive and has been reconfirmed in blue after last winter’s call. There are 17 players selected among those of Benetton Rugby and 10 those of the Zebras, with Mori and Trulla, ducal permits, coming instead from Calvisano, and one free agent, that is Leonardo Ghiraldini who is also the only one centurion present in the squad, and who could have an active role, even on the pitch, in the coming weeks, despite not playing an official match since March 2019. Absent weight, between second and third line, however, Federico Ruzza.

The blue calendar will restart from Dublin on 24 October, when the match valid for the fifth day of the Six Nations 2020 will be played against Ireland, before then closing on the 31st of the same month against England. After a weekend break, from November 14th with the new Autmun Nations Cup. Italy is included in Group B and will challenge Scotland (11/14 at 13.45), Fiji (11/21 at 13.45) and France (28/11 at 21), before closing the tournament with the match-playoff against the team from the other group that will end in the same position as the Azzurri.
