London. Former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has signed a contract that makes him the new England manager, reported Sky Sports News this Tuesday.
The German will be the third foreigner to take charge of the England men’s team, following before the Swede Sven-Goran Eriksson and the Italian Fabio Capello.
Tuchel, who led Chelsea to the Champions League title in 2021, replaces interim manager Lee Carsley three months after Gareth Southgate resigned following England’s loss to Spain in the European Championship final in July.
Tuchel, 51, has been out of work since leaving Bayern Munich at the end of last season after the German giant finished third in the Bundesliga, behind Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart.
He earned his reputation as a forward-thinking tactician in the Bundesliga after replacing Jürgen Klopp at Mainz 05 in 2009.
When Klopp left Borussia Dortmund at the end of the 2014-15 campaign, Tuchel also replaced him, leading the team to German Cup success in 2017.
The following year he signed for Paris St-Germain, where he replaced Unai Emery and won two consecutive French league titles. Tuchel also led PSG to their first Champions League final in 2020, which they lost to Bayern before leaving for Chelsea.
Taking charge of the England national team represents a new challenge for the German, who must assume the weight of history and win an important trophy, which England has not had since the World Cup in 1966.
