Thomas Tuchel is the new English national team captain, Zsolt Lőw is not in his staff

The English Football Association (FA) announced on Wednesday that it has reached an agreement with Thomas Tuchel, the 51-year-old German professional will be the new national team captain.

Tuchel is the third foreign captain of the Three Lions after the Swedish Sven-Goran Eriksson (2001-2006) and the Italian Fabio Capello (2008-2012), who died in August.

In his new assignment, the Englishman Anthony Barry will be his assistant, his former second coach, Zsolt Lőw, told m4sport.hu that he will not be with him this time, the Tuchels will start work on January 1.

Zsolt Lőw is no longer with Thomas Tuchel after six years – said the Hungarian coach

“I am very proud and honored to lead the English national team. I have a long personal connection with the sport in the country and it has already given me some incredible moments. It is a huge privilege to represent England and the opportunity to work with this special and talented team is very exciting. Working closely with my assistant Anthony, we will do everything we can to make England successful and the fans proud. I would like to thank the association for the trust and I look forward to starting our journey together” – said the new captain in the FA statement.

The England national team has been temporarily led by Lee Carsley after Gareth Southgate resigned after the European Championship final loss to Spain.

The 51-year-old Tuchel left Bayern Munich at the end of last season and has been unemployed since then. He is no stranger to English football, having won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021. Previously, he also sat on the bench of Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain.

In a statement, the FA indicated that the association’s presidency approved the decision to invite Tuchel and Barry at the beginning of last week, and Tuchel already signed his contract on October 8. The announcement of the captain’s appointment was postponed until now so as not to distract attention from the national team’s appearance in the Nations League.
