After the third defeat in a row – the 2-3 disgrace in Bochum – those responsible at FC Bayern made a decision. Coach Thomas Tuchel will leave the club in the summer despite a contract that runs until 2025. The record champions announced this on Wednesday morning. It is the result of an amicable conversation between CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and Tuchel.
“In an open, good conversation we came to the decision to mutually end our collaboration in the summer,” Dreesen is quoted as saying. The goal is to reorient the sport with a new coach for the 2024/25 season. Meanwhile, Tuchel promises to “continue to give everything I can with my coaching team for maximum success” until the end of the season.
With this, those responsible around Dreesen and sports director Christoph Freund are reacting to the latest results. In addition to the defeat in Bochum, Bayern also lost in Leverkusen and in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 at Lazio. The gap to Bundesliga leaders Leverkusen is already eight points. In addition to the end of the premier class, this also threatens the first titleless season nationally since 2012. It was recently reported that Xabi Alonso would be the preferred candidate at Säbener Strasse, while Zinédine Zidane or Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeness was also discussed. The latter is the nephew of Bavaria’s honorary president Uli Hoeness.
Tuchel only took over as coach of Bayern Munich in March 2023, after Julian Nagelsmann was suddenly promoted from office by then sports director Hasan Salihamidzic and CEO Oliver Kahn. In his first game as Bayern coach, Tuchel led his team to victory over Borussia Dortmund, which allowed them to regain the top of the table, but was shortly followed by elimination from both the DFB Cup and the Champions League. The Bundesliga championship was won primarily due to BVB’s inability.

The Munich team got off to a good start in the current season, but their balance suffered a first scratch in November with the cup disgrace in Saarbrücken. Nevertheless, the first half of the season seemed to be a success with only two defeats in all competitions, but this year Bayern didn’t really find their footing.
After a 0-1 defeat against Bremen, poor and sometimes anemic performances against Union Berlin and Augsburg followed. Although both games were narrowly won and the 3-1 win against Mönchengladbach also pointed in the right direction, Bayern suffered shipwreck in the last few weeks. For the first time since May 2015, the 33-time German champion lost three games in a row. Now those responsible and the trainer drew the consequences. (nih)
