London. German Thomas Tuchel was named England national coach this Wednesday, the third non-Englishman to occupy one of the most prestigious and demanding positions in football.
The Football Association confirmed that the 51-year-old former Chelsea coach will take over from January alongside his English assistant Anthony Barry.
In a packed press conference, the former Paris Saint Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich coach used a quote from Brazilian great Pelé to describe his excitement at becoming the third foreign coach to coach England.
“Of course, I feel very excited and honored to be here today as the new England coach,” Tuchel, who will take up his new role in January, told reporters.
“I just had the opportunity to read a quote from Pelé on the building that said that Wembley is the heart, the capital and the cathedral of football and I think he was absolutely right.”
England, however, have not won the World Cup, or any other major trophy, since 1966, and Tuchel said it was time to capitalize on one of the best squads since that 1966 team.
“I understood very quickly that it is a great job,” Tuchel said. “Once I had a time frame in my mind, from January to the World Cup, I was already excited because it suited my passion, to strive to push this group of players.”
“To be part of this federation with such a solid track record in recent tournaments to push it over the line and try to put a second star on the shirt,” he added, referring to the convention of teams wearing shirts with the number of stars. that corresponds to their triumphs in the World Cup.
Mark Bullingham, the FA’s chief executive, said a dozen candidates had been interviewed for the job, but that Tuchel had a clear vision that would give a highly sought-after squad the best chance of winning the World Cup.
Swede Sven-Goran Eriksson was the first foreign coach to coach England, between 2001 and 2006, and Italian Fabio Capello was in charge between 2008 and 2012.
England Under-21 coach Lee Carsley, who has been in charge temporarily since Gareth Southgate resigned following England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final in July, will continue for the next two Nations matches. League.
Thomas Tuchel was named England’s new coach effective January 1, 2025. The German, who signed an initial 18-month contract, will lead the national team towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Via Graphic News
