Thomas is not the most talkative defendant of this judicial afternoon devoted to immediate appearances at the Criminal Court of Draguignan. And for good reason, the young man has no memory of the facts that the institution accuses him of. “I had drunk four liters of beer and taken several pills of [benzodiazépines]I was not in my normal state”, he concedes from the box.
He even had to view the CCTV images to recognize that he was indeed the author, at a minimum, of concealment of stolen property in the Allées d’Azémar car park in Draguignan.
“A couple of Belgian tourists discovered their broken car and you, a few meters away, wearing a stolen jacket in this vehicle”, recounts President Marie-José Coureau-Vergnolle. A little further still, the municipal police will get their hands on a bag containing several objects stolen on June 12 from cars parked in various car parks in the agglomeration.
“One day I will appear behind your back”
“It’s absurd such behavior, takes a victim. He broke the central locking of my van and stole everything. My keys, my papers, my wallet…” As well as his bank card, which Thomas used three times to “buy scratch cards”. CCTV cameras, commercial this time, again leave no doubt.
Caught in the act, Thomas did not however stop there. Resisting his arrest, he insulted and threatened the police with death. “Revenge is a dish best served cold, he would have notably struck at an agent. Look at my pedigree, you’ll know who you’re dealing with. One day, I will appear behind your back.”
While in police custody, the 30-year-old also broke two drunken cells and kicked a paper-shredding machine. “The psychiatric expert noted a proven dangerousness and a high risk of recurrence without however noting any alteration in discernment, worries the prosecutor Michaël Darras. A month ago, he was arrested in Aix-en-Provence for the same thing. We must put an end to this spiral of delinquency.”
This is also decided by the court by imposing a one-year prison sentence with continued detention. When he leaves, the homeless will also have to pay 2,900 euros in damages to his victims.
