The team of volunteers around Jessica Thies from the local DRK association welcomed a total of 49 donors to the first Bebenseer blood donation appointment in 2021. In the past year 2020, all three planned blood donation campaigns could take place in Haus Bebensee – albeit like all DRK blood donation appointments since the spring of last year under the difficult conditions of the corona pandemic.
“For me, donating blood is like changing an oil”
Fixed booking of a donation time in advance, access control before entering the donation rooms, keeping your distance, wearing a face mask, multiple hand disinfection and no cozy snack after the donation: All of these are pandemic-related protective measures, but Thomas Jensen does not differ from visiting the blood donation held off. The 56-year-old service mechanic from Bark, who receives the maximum number of six blood donations per year for men alternately in Leezen, Todesfelde and Bebensee, was even able to celebrate an anniversary. For the 125th time, he took a seat on one of the dispenser beds and had half a liter of his life juice withdrawn. “Donating blood is like changing the oil for me, except that I don’t have to hand over all of my operating material,” joked Jensen during his donation. Kathrin Lakeit, medical specialist from the DRK blood donation service, confirmed that his body’s fuel reservoir was quickly refilled because the blood was constantly replicating itself.
Thomas Jensen has been donating blood since he was 18 years old, following the example of his older siblings, who are also regular donors. He can still remember his first blood donation: “That was in the old school in Warderfelde. As a young man I had little money to donate, so I wanted to help other people with my blood donations ”. He also provides voluntary help through his active membership in the volunteer fire brigade.
Appointments can be made online or by phone
Jessica Thies presented Jensen with a gift voucher on the occasion of the anniversary. “With his infectious good mood, Mr. Jensen is always a welcome guest at our donation appointments. We all hope that we can return to normal as soon as possible and that we can have a cozy get-together again after the donation. ”However, all donors showed great understanding for the current safety measures.
