Former German international Thomas Hitzlsperger recalled, in statements in the documentary ‘The Last Taboo’ and reproduced by ‘Bild’, the day his lawyer advised him, in 2012, not to reveal to the world that he was homosexual when, at the time, represented Wolfsburg.
“He told me ‘don’t talk about it under any circumstances!’. My lawyer advised me not to come out of the closet”, revealed Hitzlsperger, before acknowledging that homosexuality continues to be a taboo topic in football.
“It’s talked about, but the players don’t identify as such. It’s a taboo on the pitch and in the dressing room, especially because in Germany there is no known homosexual footballer who is active. When it comes to the players, it’s a problem. There are seven well-known professionals in the world of football who revealed themselves to be homosexual. That’s not enough”, he added, remembering that there is already at least one case in the Big-5, o de Jakub Jankto, who plays for Cagliari. “Not much has been said about it since then. There’s no reason for this to be a big deal,” he concluded.
It should be noted that Thomas Hitzlsperger was a German international on 52 occasions, in which he scored six goals. At club level, he represented emblems such as Aston Villa, Lazio, West Ham or Wolfsburg.
