In the final of ‘LEGO Masters’ last night we had that not the Netherlands, not Flanders, but the Netherlands and Flanders took home the prize. The Dutch-Flemish couple Thomas (29) and Roy (33) may call themselves the new LEGO Masters. RTL Boulevard spoke to the two men.
“We were also amazed by our own work”

They knew that the couple can build well with LEGO, but running off with the profit is quite unexpected for Thomas and Roy. “We actually went for the middle bracket,” Thomas tells RTL Boulevard. “That was a focus for us and we would be very happy.” But immediately in the first episode, the couple won the assignment and with it the golden stone. “Then we noticed right away: ‘Oh, that’s how it can go.'”
As the program progressed, Thomas and Roy soon became favorites. Week after week, except once, the Brickmaster was deeply impressed with their building techniques and original storytelling. “We did notice that it went well, yes. We were also amazed at our own work”, Roy explains. “But that others also express their appreciation, that was nice to hear.”

The recordings of the program, in which they had to make two constructions every episode, hit the couple well, both physically and mentally. “You’re on all the time,” explains Thomas. “You do everything at once: design, build, redesign.” The men also had some physical pains after a while. “You feel it especially in your back, hands and neck,” says Roy. In addition, the creativity of the candidates was repeatedly put to the test. “You want to come up with new ideas,” says Roy. “Making the same is not an option.”
During the filming of the program, the candidates were in a corona-proof bubble. “We slept at a holiday park in Hilversum, which we also went to when the recordings were over. But the next day we always had to get up early”, says Roy.

With the win in the final of LEGO Masters, Thomas and Roy not only won the prestigious title, but also a trip to LEGOLand and 25,000 euros. But the men were actually not that preoccupied with that amount of money. “The win was such a big surprise,” says Roy. “We are especially happy with the title. The cup will also have a nice place at home.”
And what are Thomas and Roy going to do now, now that they have perhaps reached the highest possible level in the field of LEGO. Maybe design a LEGO set. “We are going to look at that. There are very nice forums for this online,” Roy explains. But what the couple especially hopes is that they can talk about LEGO in schools or at cultural institutions. “And show what you can do with it. Tell the story.”

Of course, Thomas and Roy also have tips for people who have become enthusiastic about LEGO because of the program. Because how do you start with a building? “Everything starts with an idea,” says Thomas. “Ask yourself what you want to build and what you want to put in. And then just start at the beginning.” Roy about that: “It is especially nice if you have the time. And you can always break something down and start over. Just look at what you are most satisfied with and then beautiful things often come out.”
