“I was close”, says Geraint Thomas after his 4th place at Cyclingnews. “Too bad I didn’t bring my Garmin (its wattage meter). I had to drive completely blind, so that was a bit frustrating.”
But how did that come to pass? “I was riding the warm up on a different bike and when I switched to my competition bike, my meter was nowhere. Everyone was scrambling to find it. Someone clearly screwed up, but that’s just what happens.”
The run-up to the time trial was chaotic for Thomas. “I only got my racing bike 3 minutes before the start. They gave me a spare meter, but that was too big and I couldn’t get it confirmed.”
“In the end, I’m still happy with how I was able to organize my race. It’s frustrating when you get that close to a medal, but at least it’s encouraging in view of the Giro, where there is a lot of time to race against the clock. “
