This year, the experimental film festival “Process” focuses on the theme “The End of the World” / Article

This year, for the fourth time, the experimental film festival “Process” will take place in Riga, which will take place in Riga in August, but on July 24, starting at 20:00, Nurmes Brewery will host the festival’s introductory event, which will feature this year’s Baltic Analog Lab (BAL) cinema. The works created by the school participants, the performance and concert of Ieva Balode and Maksima Šenteļeva at the end of the evening, the organizers informed. The theme of this year’s festival is “The End of the World”, trying to reflect on both the different types of losses and the possibility of something new that changes in the world.

BAL film school short films were created in the conditions of the past winter, they were filmed on 8mm and 16mm film, and in this format these newly created works will also be shown to the public. In five months, thirteen students learned experimental cinema by meeting on the Zoom platform with the authors of world experimental cinema, as well as trained to use 16mm and 8mm cameras and to develop these films by hand in the BAL laboratory. As a result, more than 15 films have been made by 15 students of the school: Ieva Aleksejeva, Sintija Andersone, Luīze Cēbere, Sintija Heine, Artūrs Kruks, Monta Kvjatkovska, Henri Laķis, Linda Lindenberg, Mercedes Margoite, Elīna Matvejeva, Kei Sendak, Ivo Skansti Filips Šmits, Katrīna Tomašicka and Jānis Upmalis.

After the films with the joint audiovisual performance “Seven Sins of Memory”, the artist Ieva Balode will perform together with the sound artist Maxim Šenteļevs, solving the theme of memory through 16mm film loops created by the author, which are projected simultaneously using several film projectors, manipulating their projection rays sound and archive recordings bring the viewer into an audio-visual adventure. The event will end with a concert by musician Sarma Gabrāne and a member of the group “Nikto” Aleksandrs Aleksandrovs.

This is a warm-up event for the experimental film festival “Process”, which will take place in Riga from 18 to 22 August, offering a diverse avant-garde film program with film screenings, audiovisual performances, discussions and educational events. The festival events will take place for five days in the premises of “Nurmes” brewery at 21 Vagonu Street, in the cinema “K.Suns” and in the yard of the festival organizers – the experimental team of filmmakers / laboratory “Baltic Analog Lab”, 19a Lienes Street.

The festival “Process” is dedicated to analog experimental cinema – the works shown in it represent or have been influenced by various currents of alternative, personal and avant-garde cinema and have been created using and often experimenting with analog film. As in previous years, the festival program will feature works created by a wide range of foreign artists, as well as films by Latvian authors of various times. Shortly before the main events of the festival 14.-15. In August, it will be introduced by a creative workshop led by the Berlin artist duo Ojoboca, which will provide an insight into the creation of analogue extended cinema.
