in 2010 November 16 Lithuanian polyphonic songs – sutartinas – were included in the representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of mankind. In order to mark this important event, November 16 has been declared Treaty Day in Lithuania. This happened in June of this year after the Seimas approved amendments to the Law on Memorial Days, which decided to add to the list of memorial days.
Approaching this important day, the Council for the Protection of Ethnic Culture approved the project of methodological guidelines for the creation of Centers for the Cultivation of Contractual Tradition prepared by the experts of the Council for the Protection of Ethnic Culture, the Lithuanian National Cultural Center and the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater.
The methodological guidelines for the creation of contractual centers of transmission and nurturing of tradition have been prepared in order to define the concept of creation of contractual centers of tradition taking into account the current state, possibilities and aspirations of contractual traditions. The guidelines are a strategic document dedicated to the preservation of the sutra tradition, which describes the most important features of the sutra tradition in the past and now, the main principles and directions of the sutra tradition center activities, the variety of forms of the sutra tradition centers, granting the status of the sutra tradition center, the activities and cooperation of the sutra tradition centers, and other recommendations regarding the creation of contractual tradition centers in Aukštaitia and other areas of Lithuania.
The organizers hope that the Guidelines will help to consolidate the status of contract breeding centers that gather contract lovers, encourage the creation of new centers of contract lovers and otherwise contribute to the survival of the contract tradition.
The Guidelines can be found on the website of the Council for the Protection of Ethnic Culture: https://ekgt.lt/media/dokumentai/naujienos/2023/Sutartini%C5%B3%20tradicijos%20centr%C5%B3%20Gair%C4%97s_EKGT%20patvirtinta.docx.pdf
The guidelines will be finally legalized when they are approved by the Lithuanian National Cultural Center and the Lithuanian Academy of Theater and Music.
The Council for the Protection of Ethnic Culture congratulates everyone on the occasion of Treaty Day and invites you to cherish the treaty, recognized by UNESCO as a value of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity!
The Council is pleased that Treaty Day is celebrated together with the International Day of Tolerance. Consensus and tolerance are two complementary and reinforcing values.
And the community of contract lovers and nurturers is already starting to celebrate Contract Day, inviting them to various events. Here are some of them:
