More than a month after the C40 Mayors World Summit, where the topics related to the climate change, the Environment Secretariat of the Municipality continues with the commitments undertaken for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in public buildings.

This year the government of Buenos Aires finished the process of replacing the Teatro Colón luminaire. Now, the building is 100% LED lit.

At the end of October, more than 120 mayors from around the world attended the C40 World Mayors Summit at the Teatro Colón.

Subsequently, mayors attended the ceremony of replacing the theater’s chandelier with LED lights as part of the C40 meetings where topics such as climate change were discussed. The authorities showed their admiration by visiting one of the most emblematic places in the city.

The initiative is part of the program for the replacement of lighting fixtures in public buildings made by the Environmental Protection Agency since 2017, which aims to reduce energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions in the city.

“During the C40 summit we shared many experiences on energy consumption in cities and, within them, public buildings. In the City we have made great progress because each building has its own particularity. This year our focus is on the buildings that belong to the Ministry of Culture and, without a doubt, the most emblematic is the Teatro Colón,” specified Inés Gorbea, Secretary of the Environment.

From the government of Buenos Aires, they specified that the initiative was carried out in several phases which allowed the replacement of 7,136 LED luminaires corresponding to a displaced power of 387 kW.

Likewise, they clarified that it reaches the main hall of the Theater including the chandelier (552 lamps), the stalls and the balconies; areas of use in stairways, corridors and workshops.

“The Teatro Colón is an example of our power to raise awareness. We have a commitment to complete the LED replacement of several buildings belonging to the Ministry of Culture by the end of 2022. This year we worked in 50 buildings, replacing 12,095 luminaires, moving a power of 445 kW, which generates annual savings of over 2,590,000 kWh, for a total of 1,002 tnCO2 avoided”, explained Renzo Morosi, president of the Environmental Protection Agency.

“The switch to LED in the Colón Theater implies annual energy savings of more than 1,970,000 kWh, thus avoiding the emission of 763 tnCO2 per year,” added the Ministry of the Environment.

As reported, the most complex instance was that of the Aula Magna, since it required a remodulation of the darkening system.

“LED technology lamps consume up to 90% less energy, in this way we avoid emitting large tons of carbon dioxide compared to the use of more dated technologies (such as incandescent, fluorescent, halogen)”, they concluded.
