Next Sunday (August 25) there will be no trade ban. This means that large stores and shopping malls will be open. This is the fifth trading Sunday in 2024. We will have to wait until mid-December for the next one.
In 2023, Poles could shop during seven shopping Sundays. The trade ban is currently also in force in 2024. If the current government does not implement new regulations, this year we will also be able to shop only during seven shopping Sundays.
Shopping Sundays in 2024
Trading will be permitted on seven Sundays in 2024 – this is the current provision of the Act on Restricting Trading on Sundays and Public Holidays and on Certain Other Days. The ban on trading on Sundays and public holidays will not apply to:
- the next two Sundays preceding the first day of Christmas,
- the Sunday immediately preceding the first day of Easter,
- the last Sunday falling in January, April, June and August
Shopping Sundays in 2024 are:
- January 28
- 24 mark
- April 28
- June 30
- August 25
- December 15th
- December 22nd
The law restricting Sunday trading has been in force since 1 March 2018. At the beginning of 2018, the ban did not apply on the first and last Sunday of the month. Since January 2019, we have only been able to shop on the last Sunday of the month. Since 2020, the trade ban has not applied only on seven Sundays a year. Violating the Sunday trading ban is punishable by a fine from PLN 1,000 to PLN 100,000, and in the case of persistent violations of the regulations – a penalty of restriction of liberty.
In December 2023, President Andrzej Duda signed an amendment to the act on Sunday trading (Act of 29 November 2023 amending the Act on the restriction of trade on Sundays and public holidays and on certain other days). The amendment to the act signed by the president introduced a provision that every Christmas Eve falling on a Sunday will be a day covered by the trade ban. On the other hand, the two Sundays preceding Christmas Eve will be trading Sundays.
The ban on trade does not apply to 32 types of shops or service points, including petrol stations, pharmacies, flower shops, veterinary points or postal services. An exception allowing the opening of a shop is also a situation where the sale is conducted in a commercial establishment by the owner himself or members of his family.
