This Wednesday there is a national teachers’ strike – 2024-08-06 05:57:11

The O’Higgins Regional Office of the College of Teachers and Professors reported that this Wednesday, August 7, as part of the national strike, they will hold a rally starting at 10 a.m. in the Plaza de la Marina in Rancagua.

The regional president of the union, Samanta Jorquera, explained that one of the many reasons for the mobilization “is so that both the Government and Parliament put the teaching reality at the center of their work.”

REASONS FOR MOBILIZATION

Let us remember that the teachers called for a nationwide mobilization, “tired of the oppression, harassment, mistreatment and aggression they suffer almost daily from heads, directors, authorities, parents and students,” they explained.

Furthermore, they add that, in the first half of this year, the national teaching staff suffered the loss of two colleagues, Katherine Yoma and Albano Muñoz, victims of aggression and harassment. In the case of the teacher from Antofagasta, due to aggression by a student and her guardian; and due to workplace harassment, psychological harassment and mistreatment by the director in the case of the teacher from Molina, Maule.

They also say that, although the bill called “Coexistence, good treatment and educational well-being” was submitted to Congress on June 5, it is expected to be processed quickly.

Likewise, “teachers denounce the burden that the current Teacher Evaluation implies, to which they must dedicate hours intended for their rest, a system that does not have an adequate platform, is not very transparent in the delivery of results and does not comply with the deadlines for their delivery.”

Another argument is “non-payment of salaries on time; contributions declared but not paid; delays of years in the payment of the retirement incentive bonus; non-payment of the mentions of preschool and special education teachers; not having the pedagogical material on time; working in establishments with critical infrastructure; that the municipalities allocate education funds to other areas”, among other issues.

It should be noted that municipal education officials grouped in CONFUCEM, education assistants organized in AEFEN, and EPJA, Teachers of Education for Young People and Adults, have joined the national strike.
