Lake of Guadalupe, Edomex. Claudia Sheinbaum, presidential candidate of the Let’s keep making history coalition, meets privately with the members of the Mexican Bishops’ Conference at its headquarters in Lago de Guadalupe.
The meeting takes place within the framework of its 116th Plenary Assembly. In each electoral process, the bishops usually invite the presidential candidates to speak about their respective government projects.
Today, after the meeting with Sheinbaum, the prelates will receive Xóchitl Gálvez, standard bearer of the Fuerza y Corazón por México coalition. They will meet with Jorge Álvarez Máynez, Citizen Movement candidate, tomorrow.
On March 11, the CEM presented the Commitment to Peace to the three presidential candidates, a document with seven thematic axes and 117 proposals, in which it proposes the gradual demilitarization of security tasks, dismantling local criminal networks through disarmament and social reintegration of its members; regulate marijuana; an electoral reform and the political party system, “to eradicate its corruption and penetration by organized crime.”
Sheinbaum signed the document with a series of objections, which were attached to the text. Among them he rejected the view of the Catholic hierarchy that the country has become militarized and the assertion that a “pessimistic assessment of the current moment” prevails.
