Gianni Infantino, president of the International Football Federation, believes that the outcome of the interrupted World Cup 2022 match between Brazil and Argentina will be decided on the field.
The duel on September 5 in Sao Paulo was interrupted after seven minutes due to an alleged violation of the COVID-19 protocol.
“It’s always good to decide matches on the field, not off it,” Infantino told a news conference Monday in Buenos Aires. “It’s not always possible, we have rules. We need to look at what FIFA’s disciplinary bodies have to decide.”
They interrupted the match after employees of the Brazilian health agency Anvisa and a police officer came to the field to withdraw four players from the Argentine national team playing in England. According to the agency, they were to be quarantined. At that time, Brazil introduced compulsory quarantine for foreigners coming from England. “It can’t happen that they interrupt the match like this. It’s unacceptable and it damages football,” said Infantino.
