The Executive Director of the National Commission against Corruption, Santiago Palomo, met with the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro to address issues for the benefit of the Guatemalan population.

At that meeting, both reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to the fight against corruption in the country. They also delved into effective strategies to combat corruption, reaffirming their word to achieve a plural and transparent democracy.

“I expressed our support for the initiatives of the Anonymous Whistleblower Law and the Final Beneficiary Law that will strengthen the fight against corruption,” Almagro noted.

Derived from the actions and investigations that began last year against the Semilla Movement party, the general secretary condemned the attempted coup d’état by the Public Ministry of Guatemala.

“The actions and statements of prosecutors Rafael Curruchiche and Leonor Morales constitute an alteration of the constitutional order, a breach of the State of the State and a violation of the human rights of the population,” he highlighted in a statement.

For the secretary of the Organization, the attempt to annul the general elections constituted at the time “the worst form of democratic breakdown and the consolidation of a political fraud against the will of the people.”
