The night of October 11 various regions of the northern Mexico they lit up with northern lights that allowed us to capture the sky in different shades ranging from pink to blue.

This luminous phenomenon astonished dozens of inhabitants of states such as Sonora and Chihuahua, who were able to witness beautiful skies due to a geomagnetic storm that affects the Earth, which would be one of the most intense in recent years.

Las storms solar They occur when there are explosions on the sun known as solar flares. These release large amounts of energy and charged particles into space. Upon reaching Earth, these particles interact with the Earth’s magnetic field. As they enter the atmosphere, they collide with air atoms and molecules, such as oxygen and nitrogen. These collisions release energy in the form of light, generating the northern lights.

It is worth remembering that during the first week of May, one of the most powerful geomagnetic storms in two decades was recorded, which produced colorful shows in the night skies. The states in which they could be seen were Zacatecas, Jalisco, Baja California, Sonora, Coahuila and Chihuahua.

Although at first it was thought that this phenomenon could not be seen with the naked eye, the Sonoran photographer, Gerardo L, known as @GGerardox2 (https://x.com/GGerardox2), was able to capture impressive images in that state of the country.

However, it is expected that people who did not have the opportunity to witness this phenomenon on October 10 will be able to do so this Friday.

According to experts, the best conditions to see the northern lights in the sky are in places with little light pollution, which could also mean that the states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Sonora and Nuevo León have the opportunity to observe them this October 11.

The northern lights, also known as the northern lights, are a natural phenomenon that manifests itself as a colorful luminous spectacle in the night sky, normally visible in regions near the north magnetic pole. This phenomenon occurs when the solar wind, composed of charged particles emitted by the sun, reaches Earth and interacts with the Earth’s magnetic field.

Upon passing the magnetosphere, these particles are channeled towards the poles and enter the upper atmosphere, where they collide with gas atoms such as oxygen and nitrogen. These collisions release energy in the form of light, creating the characteristic colors of the auroras: greens, yellows, reds, purples and blues. The specific color depends on the type of gas and the altitude of the collision; For example, oxygen emits green at lower altitudes and red at higher altitudes, while nitrogen can produce blue and purple hues.

The northern lights are primarily visible in geographic areas above the Arctic Circle, such as Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Canada, and Alaska, and are most common during the autumn and spring equinox, when solar wind conditions and magnetosphere are optimal for their formation.
