This was one of the conclusions of film industry professionals, yesterday at the Splendid Palace cinema, nominating the nominees for the 2021 National Film Award “Big Kristaps”.
Without repeating last year’s situation, when the biggest challenge of the jury was the nomination “Best Actress”, because there was a lack of female actors, this year Guna Zariņa (“Emīlija. Queen of the Latvian Press”), Dace Everss (“Bedre”), Asnāte Sofija Rožkalne ( “Tizlenes”) and Madeleine Waldberg (“In the Mirror”).
A new nomination has been added – “The Best Multi-Series Film”, where Alvis Hermanis and JRT actors “Agency”, “Emilija. Queen of the Latvian Press ”(directors Andis Mizišs, Kristīne Želve, Dāvis Sīmanis, Gints Grūbe) and“ Stay Negative ”(directors Māris Lagzdiņš, Una Rozenbauma).
In the feature film section, Dāvis Sīmanis’ “Year before the War” competes with each other in 11 categories, followed by “Emīlija. Queen of the Latvian Press ”,“ Mirror ”and“ Tizlenes ”ten times.
Dita Rietuma, the director of the National Cinema Center, pointed out that the year was very difficult, if only because there were minimal cinemas, which is the basis of film distribution.
“I invite everyone to watch Latvian films in cinemas, because the film in the best audiovisual quality can be appreciated right there,” she said.
According to Ieva Romanova, the chairwoman of the Latvian Cinematographers’ Union, at first there were concerns about whether the big Kristaps should not be postponed due to the pandemic, but there were many applications – the film selection commission watched 92 films.
This year, the Lifetime Achievement Award will be given to costume designer Ieva Kundziņa, whose career began with the film “Nightingale” (1966) and continued in 40 more films. A sketch exhibition will be created in her honor at Splendid Palace.
Four films will compete for the “Kristaps the Great” award in the category “Best Feature Film”: “Bedre” (director Dace Pūce), “Year before the War” (director Dāvis Sīmanis), “Mirror” (director Laila Pakalniņa), “Tizlenes” (director Marta Elīna Martinsone).
The program of “Kristaps the Great” will feature the premiere of two new Latvian films – “On the Unseen, Brasa!” (director Ivars Zviedris) and “Delle” (director Andrejs Verhoustinskis).
The most important event of the Latvian film industry will take place from November 11 to 15, the awards will be presented on November 14, and the solemn ceremony will also be available to watch live on Latvian Television.
