Very often, scholars speak of the correlation between healthy eating and cancer prevention. In the case of breast cancer, this relationship seems extremely close. It seems, in fact, that sugar increases the risk of this cancer. According to several studies, this very common food can increase the risk of breast cancer.
All the fault of the insulin
The news came from a study published in the journal Cancer Research by a team of scholars from Texas University. According to research results, the real culprit is insulin.
However, it is the sugar that stimulates its production so this very common food can increase the risk of breast cancer. In fact, insulin rises when sugars are taken.
If you usually have a balanced elevation of insulin by eating healthy, the intake of too many sugars causes spikes and inflammation. Too high insulin stimulates also the IGF-I, a growth factor that also stimulates cancer cells. Not only that, insulin also increases testosterone production. All of these factors appear to affect the growth and onset of breast cancer.
The importance of breast density
To confirm these results comes another study conducted by the “Canadian Cancer Society” and published in “Bmc Public Health”. In this case, the researchers took into consideration the correlation between breast density and sugar consumption. It has long been known that women with higher breast density have a higher risk of developing cancer.
Almost 2,000 women were analyzed during this study, some of them already in menopause and others still fertile.
The results confirmed the impact of sugar consumption on breast density. In fact, women who consumed at least three glasses of sugar-rich soft drinks per day had a breast density that was 3% higher than other women.
Menopausal women were particularly at risk. These tended, in fact, to consume a greater quantity of sugary foods. And therefore they denoted higher breast density levels.
