PULLINGS. There is a new, free offer in the Pfullingen public library: the reading trainer and friend who reads aloud »Luka Reading Owl«. Luka has the charm of a toy, but is not one, because the reading owl reads printed, illustrated children’s books and thus enables playful access to the book medium. The purchase of currently three Luka reading owls was supported by the friends of the public library in Pfullingen e. V. They can be borrowed for 14 days, and can be extended up to three times.
Luka already knows 150 books for children in kindergarten and primary school from the Pfullingen public library and can read them aloud. Luka also reads books in other languages. In Pfullingen, Luka has books in Turkish, Arabic and Persian/Farsi in addition to English. Regardless of the language: the texts were read in by professional speakers so that the children can always hear the correct pronunciation and intonation when reading with Luka. In addition, children who are just learning to read can of course also read the texts.
Frequent reading training with Luka also promotes the children’s reading motivation and offers a useful leisure activity in addition to TV, tablet and co. Of course, working with Luka Reading Owl cannot replace the reading time with (grand)parents – but it can complement it in a meaningful way. Besides, Luka always has time. In this way, the child is read to as much and as often as and when they want.
Operation is very simple: no app is required for the library Luka, no internet or WLAN. Luka can be borrowed in plug & play mode and started directly without installation. Thanks to a built-in camera, Luka recognizes a book from the Pfullingen public library that you put in front of him, reads it page by page and lets you know when it’s time to turn the pages. The matching (physical) books are of course also included, they are all marked with a Luka sticker. In addition, Luka can also play children’s songs, tell poems or fairy tales.
