A 4.6 billion won large-scale embezzlement case occurred at the National Health Insurance Corporation, which manages health insurance premiums.
The Corporation announced on the 23rd that it discovered that the employee responsible for debt management at the Financial Management Bureau, Mr. A, had embezzled about 4.6 billion won, filed a criminal complaint at the Wonju Police Station in Gangwon-do and frozen his account. The stolen money is medical expenses that have been withheld due to debt foreclosure, etc.
In order to embezzle public funds, Mr. A is known to have manipulated the creditor’s account information between April and September so that medical bills were deposited into his account. It was found that 100 million won from April to July, 300 million won on 16th and 4.2 billion won on 21st were deposited into this employee’s account.
On the morning of the 22nd the Corporation confirmed the misappropriation by verifying the withholding. In order to recover the capital, the Corporation said it was taking measures to interim seizure of the deposits and working closely with the police to minimize the damage. However, there are concerns that the employee may have difficulty investigating and collecting damages after fleeing to Germany immediately after the embezzlement.
The embezzlement of 4.6 billion won is the largest embezzlement that has occurred within the industrial complex. It should be noted that the NPS, which manages the public health insurance premiums, cannot shirk the responsibility for mismanagement of employees who commit large-scale embezzlement. The agency also said: “We are taking the incident seriously.”
