This technology of electric cars costs a fortune

Electric cars and smartphones have a few things in common. Both devices are not only powered by electricity, but are also equipped with the latest systems. Camera systems have been installed in cars, especially electric cars, for several years now. They are particularly helpful when parking and reversing, as there are now even views such as the 360-degree camera. Some vehicle models also have digital exterior mirrors and this is said to be a step into the future, as they reduce air resistance and minimize blind spots.

E-cars: Caution is advised with these components

The ADAC is now warning about the so-called virtual exterior mirrors. The ADAC has been evaluating the view from the vehicle in its car tests for around 24 years. They have tested a total of 3,000 different vehicles so far. Of these, 20 received a rating of “very good” and 121 “good”. Even though the virtual exterior mirrors are supposed to offer a larger field of vision, the displays in the door panel are often inappropriately positioned. In addition, the so-called depth perception is “significantly limited”, which makes it more difficult to judge the distance.

According to the General German Automobile Club (ADAC), it is not just the digital exterior mirrors that cause problems, but also the camera rear-view mirrors, because all the reflections and glare on the displays can impair the driver’s vision. Another point is the high repair costs. Exterior mirrors and other components on the electric car quickly become the target of parking bumps or vandalism.

If the vehicle does not have conventional exterior mirrors but rather camera versions, repairs can be expensive in the event of damage. In the worst case, a complete replacement of both cameras, including the lens, sensor and housing, is necessary. However, it can be even more expensive “if a complex calibration with special diagnostic equipment is then necessary.” The ADAC emphasizes in a press release that even slight contact is enough to damage the sensitive system.
