Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – In the Covid-19 virus pandemic, giving vitamins to patients infected with the virus has always been prioritized. It is said that it is believed that foods, fruits and vegetables that contain vitamins C, D, and E will help cure Covid-19 patients.
However, in fact, some recent research has shown something different. Recent research results show that vitamin D does not work at all in tackling Covid-19.
Reporting from Reuters, a study recently conducted in Brazil shows that high vitamin D levels do not improve the health problems caused by the Covid-19 virus.
Increasing vitamin D supplementation in critically ill patients did not shorten their time in hospital isolation and did not decrease the likelihood of them being transferred to intensive care, requiring mechanical ventilation, or that death.
In the study, doctors randomly assigned 240 patients who were hospitalized for severe symptoms, either a high dose of vitamin D3 or a placebo.
The result was that only 6.7% of patients in the vitamin D group improved compared with 51.5% of patients in the placebo group, according to a paper posted on medRxiv. The same was true when the researchers focused on 116 patients with vitamin D deficiency before treatment.
The investigators then assessed that the first randomized trial of its kind showing that vitamin D supplementation was “ineffective for improving length of hospital stay or other clinical outcomes among hospitalized patients with severe COVID-19.”
This is of course contrary to previous research. As written in DetikHealth, several studies, one of which was conducted by the University of Chicago, showed that vitamin D is very important in making antibodies that can prevent respiratory infections.
Apart from focusing on the corona virus prevention vaccine, scientists are currently competing to find the best vitamin ingredients for Covid-19 patients.
