American film actress Scarlett Johansson has sued the media and entertainment industry conglomerate Walt Disney Company for streaming Black Widow, claiming that it violated the terms of the contract and deprived her of potential income.
In a lawsuit filed with the Los Angeles Supreme Court on Thursday, the lead actor and executive producer of Black Widow claims that her contract guaranteed exclusive cinema screening of the film.
Johansson’s potential profits have been linked to the film’s revenue from cinemas, but the company has begun showing it in both cinemas and the Disney + streaming service.
A Disney spokesman said in a statement that going to court is unfounded.
“This claim is particularly sad and disappointing given the blatant disregard for the horrific and protracted global impact of the Covid-19 pandemic,” the statement said.
Black Widow was delayed several times due to pandemic restrictions, but earned $ 80 million in North American cinemas and another $ 78 million in international markets over the weekend, which had seen unprecedented high revenues since the pandemic began.
True, already in the following weeks over the weekend treasury revenues fell sharply. The U.S. Cinema Owners Association has already reprimanded the strategy of bringing movies to cinemas and streaming platforms at the same time.
