Four figures for “more efficiency”. The Net Ecoute toll-free number, managed by the e-Childhood association, now becomes 3018, a platform to fight digital violence suffered by children and adolescents. Cyber harassment, revenge porn, webcam blackmail, identity theft, overexposure to screens…, this new number, which replaces 0800 200 000, is intended to become the national helpline for all issues of protection of minors on the Internet.
“This new short issue reinforces the effectiveness of our action with young users and their families. With the support of the State Secretariat in charge of Children and Families, the 3018 becomes the one-stop shop for the protection of young people in their digital life, from childhood to adolescence ”, explains to 20 Minutes Justine Atlan, Executive Director of the Association e-Enfance.
“Cases of cyberstalking increased by 57% in 2020”
This confidential and free line, managed since 2009 by the association e-Enfance, is accessible by telephone 6 days a week, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., but also on 3018.fr by live chat, via Messenger and WhatsApp. “The aim is also to show very clearly that cyberstalking – and cyberviolence in general – is a subject taken very seriously by public authorities, that it is a central subject in the lives of young people. All the more so with the different confinements that we have just experienced, ”adds Justine Atlan.
Since the start of the health crisis, which has led to several periods of confinement and closure of schools, calls received on Net listening have “almost doubled and cases of cyberstalking have increased by 57% in 2020”, specifies the association. e-Childhood. The number of calls on Net Ecoute relating to this violence amounted to 4,315 in 2020, against 2,747 in 2019.
“Cyber violence takes place in a space where children and adolescents are often on their own. The 3018 is the digital counterpart of 119 (number of the child in danger). Its vocation is to help, support and assist all young people who are victims of online violence (…) Cyber violence has only name “cyber”. They have very real consequences, beyond the digital sphere, ”says Adrien Taquet, Secretary of State for Children and Families.
Accelerated reporting to social networks
The 3018 can intervene at the request of young victims or their manager to remove an account or illegal content that would harm them. In fact, 3018 can trigger a dedicated reporting procedure to take care of the victim (reception, listening, assistance and advice). If necessary, he can analyze the account or the content concerned, qualify it legally, and list the constituent elements. He can also collect a report and send it directly to the moderation service of the social network concerned via a priority channel.
