Fairphone is a Dutch company specializing in the production of sustainable phones. What does it mean? It provides not only long software support for its models, but also spare parts. And now it has ended support for its second generation model – Fairphone 2. The last major update was Android 10 and it will get the last security patch this March. This is more than one would expect. After all, the Fairphone 2 runs on an outdated chipset Snapdragon 801, which Qualcomm ended support for back in 2016.
Although the Fairphone 2 will not receive any further updates with the company commits to hardware support and will provide replacement parts while supplies last. However, from May this year, the Fairphone 2 will be considered vulnerable, which means it will not be protected against new threats and attacks. So the Fairphone 2 is outdated at this point, but it’s a great example of how to strive for sustainability and extend the life of consumer electronics.
