Microsoft has released a preview build Windows 11 for members of the Windows Insider Program. To download this update, users need a PC running Windows 10, but some creative users can run Windows 11 on their phones Windows Phone old school.
An engineering student named Gustavo Monce uploaded a video showing how Windows 11 can be run on a Lumia 950 XL, one of the first devices to use the Windows 10 Mobile operating system.
Apparently, repairing Windows Phone to run the full version of Windows has been a hobby for Monce since five years ago. He hooked up his friend, Bingxing Wang, to make this idea a reality.
“It all started five years ago, when Windows 10 Mobile was almost obsolete,” said Monce, as quoted from The Verge, Friday (2/7/2021).
“Over time and we started talking about it, discussion groups formed and then we had a community of people who were interested in running the full Windows 10 on a Lumia 950. We are now a team of about 15 people, and we have made a lot of progress.” .
From the video that Monce uploaded on YouTube, Windows 11 looks to be running pretty well on the Lumia 950 XL screen. Interface and features in Windows 11 can be displayed, including a new taskbar, a new Start menu, and even a Snap layout.
Of course the performance is not as fast as when running on a PC, and the animation looks very slow. But at least Monce is able to run Windows 11 on an aging phone.
To bring Windows 11 to Windows Phone, Monse and his team ported and reverse engineered existing drivers. Because they had previously worked on Windows 10 and Windows 10X for Lumia, their work was made easier.
Monce and his team have also created a dedicated site for their project that contains tools, guides and documentation for bringing Windows 10 and Windows 11 to an old Windows Phone phone.
There are some phone features that cannot function normally after the phone is installed with Windows 11, such as camera, SMS and battery drain. But this project is intended for engineers and developers who are interested in playing around with devices that have been abandoned by Microsoft.
