This new Xiaomi smartphone costs less than 100 euros

Xiaomi has announced a new smartphone that costs less than 100 euros. Despite the low price, the Redmi 12C still has reasonable specifications.

Read on after the announcement.

Xiaomi Redmi 12C officially presented

The Redmi 12C is the latest budget phone from Xiaomi. The device has been announced in China and has a suggested retail price of 699 yuan. Converted, this amounts to around 96 euros. However, it is unclear whether the budget phone will later appear in the Netherlands as well.

The Xiaomi device is notable for its large 6.71-inch screen, which has a low resolution of 1650 by 720 pixels. As a result, images simply don’t look as sharp, which is a shame if you watch a lot of YouTube and Netflix videos. The bezels around the display are wide, and there’s a waterdrop notch for the selfie camera at the top.

As you can see in the image above, the Xiaomi Redmi 12C appears in a number of striking colours. The back has a special texture which is supposed to ensure that you don’t see fingerprints and smudges. The smartphone has a headphone jack for wired headphones and dual SIM support.

The fingerprint scanner is amazing. Not only because we don’t always see it with cheaper Android phones, but also because it has a special place. It’s on the back in the camera island, next to the dual camera. Fortunately, Xiaomi has placed it in the center so that the scanner is easy to reach.

Under the hood

Then the internal hardware of the Xiaomi Redmi 12C. The budget phone has a MediaTek Helio G85 processor. This is not a speed monster and a chip clearly intended for cheaper devices. For example, it is also in the Motorola Moto G41 in Moto G31which will be released at the end of 2021. The processor is faster than that of the redmi A1, a budget phone that Xiaomi released earlier. The 12C’s software is also a bit dated: the Xiaomi still works Android 12.

Xiaomi adds to this 4GB of RAM and also sells a version with 6GB of RAM. So you also get double the storage: 128GB instead of 64GB. The battery has a capacity of 5000 mAh and should be more than enough to use the Redmi 12C for a day and a half without recharging. A quick charge option is missing.

Finally, the Xiaomi smartphone is equipped with a total of three cameras. The main camera has a resolution of 50 megapixels and can also take better pictures in the dark thanks to the available night mode. Additionally, there is a portrait mode, where the 2 megapixel depth sensor provides a depth of field effect. The phone takes selfies in 5 megapixels.
