New feature makes WhatsApp a bit more secure
A few years ago, WhatsApp introduced an interesting feature. When you forwarded a photo or video, you could choose to show the file only once. Did the recipient open the video or photo? Then the file was automatically discarded when they finished viewing it.
WhatsApp is now going a step further and introducing a new feature that makes the app a bit more secure. There is now also the option to send a voice message with a one-time display.
When you send someone a voice message, they can open the file once (but listen to it multiple times). Then the sound file disappears automatically when they close the sound clip. It’s a useful option if you want to pass on sensitive information in a voice message.
To send a one-time voice message in WhatsApp, follow the steps below.

- In WhatsApp, open the conversation where you want to send a voice message;
- Hold your finger on the microphone icon and swipe up;
- Tap the ‘1’ in the bubble and start speaking to record your message;
- To send the message, tap the send icon at the bottom right.
The feature will be rolled out by WhatsApp in the near future. So the function may not be immediately available on your iPhone.
More new features for WhatsApp
WhatsApp has been rolling out more new features lately that make the app more secure. Earlier this year, WhatsApp introduced chat locks to help users protect their sensitive conversations.
But recently they went one step further with the launch of the ‘secret code’. This is an extra layer of security to make your chats even harder to find, even if someone has access to your iPhone or you share your phone with others.
You can now also send photos in original quality in the popular app. There is a small limit. You can only send files smaller than 2 GB. You won’t get that easily for photos, but video files can become so large quite quickly.
