What’s more, a user survey found that the spray reduced the risk of infection Covid-19 up to 78%. The Taffix formulation can work in 50 seconds and each application provides five hours of protection, according to the researchers.
The nasal spray does not cause congestion, and the protective gel is very unobtrusive, so menthol is added and the user knows a metered dose has been given. According to researchers, the protective layer is in place.
“Taffix is not a substitute for a mask, it’s an added layer of protection,” said Dr Dalia Meggido, co-founder and chief executive officer of Nasus Pharma, the Israeli biopharma company that developed the nasal spray. Daily Express, Wednesday (25/11).
“Masks obviously help prevent infection, but they don’t offer 100% protection. Taffix provides an additional layer of protection, which is especially useful in high-risk environments such as public transport, shops and schools, basically any confined space,” he continued.
Taffix uses hypromellose otherwise known as hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), which is a gelling powder found in antiallergic nasal sprays and products designed to target and eliminate the common cold.
This product has been developed to improve existing formulations by making the particles smaller. In the existing product, particles range between 0.2 micron and 400 micron, with an average particle size of 72.6 microns.
In comparison, the particles in Taffix are only 10 microns to 100 microns in size, and the average size is 19.1 microns. There are also many variations in the form of particles found in commercial HPMC products, note the researchers, which create cracks and weak spots in the gel layer.
The particles in Taffix are uniformly spherical, which makes it more effective at stopping viruses and other tiny particles from reaching the nasal membrane. Commenting on the findings, Dr Gill Jenkins explained the pH of the nasal cavity is usually around 6.8, which is almost neutral on the acidity to alkalinity scale. Unfortunately this is the ideal environment for virus growth.

“Studies show that no respiratory virus, including the coronavirus, can survive at a pH of 3.5 (which is slightly acidic) or below without damaging the nasal mucosal cells,” he explained.
