This NASA Helicopter Successfully Completes the Toughest Mission on Mars, Here’s Its Activity

NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter has just completed its toughest mission on Mars. During its ninth and most recent flight, the four-pound vehicle glided through the planet’s skies, over what has been termed ‘unfriendly terrain’.

NASA says Ingenuity’s two previous flights put the craft in line with another Mars rover, Perseverance. This latest flight takes the helicopter over terrain that is too difficult to navigate.

“Perseverance is on the eastern edge of a scientifically interesting region, called ‘Séítah,’ characterized by sandy ripples that can be very challenging terrain for wheeled vehicles such as aircraft,” Ingenuity chief pilot Håvard Grip and chief mechanic, Bob Balaram, said in a statement. a blog post released just before the Ingenuity flight, reported by Popular Mechanism, Thursday (8/7/2021).

The images captured by Ingenuity during the flight can provide geologists with insight into how the undulating features formed. Ingenuity flew for over 2.5 minutes at a clip of about 16 feet (5 meters) per second.

The aircraft covered an area of 2,051 feet, or 625 meters, breaking many records in the process. Flight 9 Ingenuity also expands the boundaries of the helicopter’s navigation system, which is designed to operate over flatter surfaces.

Ingenuity takes pictures of the Martian surface, then computer algorithms study those images and help helicopters make split-second decisions about where to land safely. But the algorithm is designed to make this decision on the assumption that the ground will be flat.
