This move will save the NFL career – VG

Kåre Vedvik (26) has been cut by the NFL team Carolina Panthers, but the Norwegian’s time in Charlotte is probably not over for that reason.

He’s been through it before.

In 2018, the Norwegian NFL hope was Kåre Vedvik assaulted on the street and ended up in hospital the night before the league’s “cut down” day, which delayed his NFL career by one year.

Last year he was so traded to the Minnesota Vikings, who still chose to get rid of the Norwegian when the squad went down to 53 players. The New York Jets, on the other hand, were ready to accept the strong right leg of Vedvik, and a year ago he made his NFL debut. However, it did not go the way, and it was with the one game that kicks for the Jets.

On Saturday, it was the Carolina Panthers who chose to release the 26-year-old. It has now the team confirmed on its website.

– It has been a roller coaster, Vedvik told VG about the last couple of weeks before Saturday’s heavy message.

It was a close battle between the Norwegian and Joseph Charlton over who would be the punter for Carolina, but Panthers coach Matt Rhule eventually ended up trusting Charlton.

However, that does not mean that Vedvik’s time in Carolina is over. As far as VG knows, the Panthers are interested in signing Vedvik to their training squad. Then you are still part of the team, but are not part of the fighting squad.

This year, the NFL has expanded the teams’ “practice squad” from 10 to 16 places to give the clubs more leeway around covid-19. However, you must first release a player to be able to sign him to the training squad, and in the meantime, another team can also choose to sign Vedvik to their active squad.

Vedvik spoke to VG about the experience of being cut from Bill’s last week:

– It’s a little different now than last time I was cut by a team (by the New York Jets in 2019). Then it was a bit like “why was I cut?”, “Maybe I’m not good enough?”, But the more you do it the more you learn about the NFL as a whole, says Vedvik.

Now he has found a process that works, thanks to the help of NFL veterans like Steven Hauschka (Bills) and JJ Janson (Panthers). In training last week, he impressed a lot both as a punter and kicker, when it was not enough to win the job.

Vedvik was, however, prepared for the fact that he could end up being cut, but told earlier this week that he finally experiences progress on the field again after a long time on the spot resting, thanks to a simple move:

– I write down every day what I do that works, and what I need to get better at, so the next day I have a clear picture of what I need to work on. It has worked very well, he says.

One reason why the Panthers are probably interested in keeping Vedvik as a reserve is that he can step in as both “punter” and “kicker”.

– They wanted to see me both score and kick field goals, because with the corona situation it is beneficial to have a player who can do both if another gets the virus. It’s pretty nice to be able to do both.
