Tine has replaced the plastic spoon with a wooden spoon. Consumers’ judgment is merciless.
Tine Meieriet has launched a new spoon for its yoghurts after it was banned from selling a number of disposable plastic products on 3 July.
The ban has been introduced in line with the EU directive, even though the law has not yet been incorporated into the EEA agreement.

The new wooden spoon was not well received by consumers.

A consumer writes:
– It would have been an advantage that it was so long that you could actually use it then.
Another strongly opposes the initiative.
– This hysteria has become far too stupid Norway has become a ridiculous joke for the Swedes who act out of madness! What does it help to replace a small plastic spoon and a straw when the cup and drinking bag consist of plastic?

– There were no better alternatives
Tine’s head of communications, Sindre Ånonsen, explains that the spoon is a temporary solution.
– We knew this was a bad solution, but there were no better alternatives, says Ånonsen to Nettavisen.
Tine has received several feedbacks from customers, but they expected to receive them. There are two recurring problems.
– First and foremost, the spoon is too short and people say that they get food on their fingers. In addition, not everyone thinks it is as comfortable with a wooden spoon in your mouth when eating rice lunch. This is a known issue with wooden cutlery. It can give a worse experience, says Ånonsen.
During September and October, there will be a new spoon in bamboo. That spoon will have the same length as the plastic spoon had.
The head of communications also says that the change from plastic has taken time for both the suppliers of packaging and Tine. The company has had to change its production lines.
– The alternative was to run production without a spoon alternative. We consider this to be an even worse solution. Then people must have walked around with a spoon in their pocket.
But if you absolutely want rice lunch with a plastic spoon, it is still available in a couple of stores.
– After a given date, the suppliers of packaging do not have the opportunity to produce and sell more plastic, but it is allowed for those who have the plastic in stock to use it. It would not have been environmentally friendly to throw it away.
The plastic spoon is therefore gradually replaced.

Stir out the ice manually
Tine is not the only one who has received criticism for the new solutions. The plastic spoon on the popular McFlurry ice cream at McDonalds has also been replaced.
The ban on disposable plastic has created enormous challenges for McDonalds ice cream.
The plastic spoon used to stir the ice and the topping together. Now the employees have to stir out the ice manually. This becomes more time consuming and less automated.
