Snowy and slippery road sections are cleaned and sprinkled with anti-slip materials. In order to improve driving conditions, 204 winter service equipment units of SJSC “Latvian Road Maintenance” are involved in road maintenance works.

Difficult driving conditions on the main state roads are on the Ainaži highway (A1), Vidzeme highway (A2), Valmiera highway (A3), Riga bypasses (A4 and A5), Daugavpils highway (A6) in the section from Riga to the Government, Bauska highway (A7 ), Jelgava highway (A8), Liepāja highway (A9) in the section from Riga to Saldus and from Skrunda to Liepāja, Ventspils highway (A10), Liepāja-Rucava highway (A11), Rēzekne highway (A12), Grebņeva – Medumi highway (A13 ), Daugavpils bypass (A14), Rezekne bypass (A15) and Koknese highway (P80).

Driving on regional roads is difficult throughout Latvia.

Drivers must be particularly careful to choose the speed that is appropriate for the condition of the road surface and to maintain a careful distance. So-called black ice can form on the roads, which is invisible, and the driver only feels it when starting to maneuver the car – braking, maneuvering with the steering wheel and pedals.
