The Mid-Century style that animates this California house takes us back to the 1950s: neutral palettes, hints of pastel colors, geometric patterns and organic shapes.
The kitchen, in perfect Mid-Century style, recalls the timeless charm of the 1950s, with touches of color inspired by the Californian coast. Here, light wood blends harmoniously with marble surfaces, while delicate light blue accents give a sense of freshness, evoking the relaxed atmosphere of days at the beach.Courtesy of Jennifer Austin Design. Nostalgia for 1950s design

A neutral palette, animated only by small, expertly calibrated touches of colour. Modern furnishings, with organic lines, enriched with geometric patterns and stylized graphics. A clever mix of contrasting materials that balance each other. These are the distinctive elements of a Mid-Century style house: a house with vintage charm which, just like this one in California, brings the iconic atmosphere of the legendary 1950s back to life. The years of the first “rounded” and enveloping shapes, of mass-produced furniture and of the triumph of plastic materials. At the helm of this stylistic vision is the interior designer Jennifer Austin which was able to reinterpret in a contemporary key the mid-century aesthetic so loved by the owner couple. He, a retired fertility doctor with a great passion for boating, wanted to live near the water to enjoy the boat and the views; she, a health and wellness coach, dreamed of an environment that was in harmony with the beauty and serenity of coastal life, without giving up a touch of originality and personal style. So the couple found their corner of paradise on the picturesque Naples Island, in Southern California, an area famous for its canals and direct access to the bay. The house, originally built in the 1980s«had an aesthetic that was influenced by those years, with dark woods and massive moldings», explains Jennifer. But, thanks to his skillful intervention, it has been transformed into a villa that reflects timeless elegance and renewed coastal architecture. The intervention was in fact able to merge a functional design with the refinement that the couple has always desired, giving life to a space that celebrates light, modernity and Californian beauty. «The view of the canals, which open onto a large bay with crystal clear waters, became the perfect backdrop for a total transformation that required almost two years of renovation work», says the designer. And, indeed, the result is a house in which every detail tells a story and in which past and present coexist in perfect balance.
