This message from Ryan Murphy gives a lot of hope for the future

While a slew of his productions have been nominated for the GLAAD Awards promoting LGBTQ + creation in the United States, the showrunner speaks about his work and reviews the obstacles he had to overcome to get there.

Despite the health crisis, 2020 has been a richer year for Ryan Murphy – and GLAAD has captured it. Last week, the American association announced the list of named productions as part of its famous GLAAD Awards. For neophytes, this is an annual ceremony aimed at rewarding works that participate for better LGBTQ + visibility. And for his 32nd edition, Ryan Murphy won six nominations in total: for his series Hollywood, Ratched and 9-1-1: Lone Star, for his films The Prom and The Boys in the Band, and finally for his documentary Circus of Books. Distinctions that undoubtedly moved him and thus pushed to speak on social networks.

The challenges of representation

“I started in this business exactly 25 years ago, he confides on Instagram. At the time, in the mid-90s, I was told that I couldn’t have an LGBTQ character in my work. Too controversial, it could put off advertisers, etc. In fact, I was told I couldn’t even have a straight female character (Mary Cherry in Popular) wearing a faux fur coat because it was ‘just too gay’ according to policy makers. I persisted and fought and had the support of so many allies. And wow, how things have changed “. A pleasing finding that cannot be denied.

“Just last year, my company not only created content that highlighted hundreds of LGBTQ characters, it also employed hundreds of hiring LGBTQ actors: who, five years earlier, would no doubt have said that being authentic would have earned them their jobs (and therefore their rent, food or social coverage), continue Ryan Murphy. These GLAAD appointments show me one important thing: progress. Thank you to all those who watch these series, films and documentaries. I firmly believe that this work changes and saves lives “. And that’s only the beginning !
