During the grueling wait to get to the hospital, the man experienced a burning sensation in his genitals, as well as pain that radiated to his upper chest and abdomen.
He also vomited but no neurological symptoms were reported. According to the report, it was the first case in South Africa where a cobra (Naja annulifera) bit a person’s genitals.
After being hospitalized, his penis and scrotum were swollen, dark purple in color and painful.
“Scrotal necrosis was diagnosed, and he received multiple doses of non-specific snake venom antiserum and broad-spectrum antibiotics,” the hospital’s medical report said.
“Scrotal necrosis was reported to involve the entire fascia (skin to internal spermatic cord) and was excised with wide margins. The primary closure was done, leaving the drain there,” the report added Urology Case Reports.
