Jellyfish this one is no ordinary animal. It can be said, able to live forever alias immortal under certain conditions.
Its name is Turritopsis dohrnii, its habitat is in various oceans of the world. It is one of the few animals that is able to reverse its life cycle over and over again, thus approaching the term can live forever.
As long as Turritopsis dohrnii is not eaten by predators, it can continue to live indefinitely like most living things.
This jellyfish begins its life as a larva that clings to rocks in the water. Once properly attached, the larvae metamorphose into polyps which can then clone themselves into large numbers.
As quoted detikINET from the BBC, next jellyfish small then appeared, shaped like a miniature umbrella with tentacles, swimming in the ocean. They become sexually mature.
When these jellyfish reach the end of their lives due to injury or starvation, they go to the bottom of the ocean and begin to decompose. But miraculously, their cells then grow back and develop into polyps. The polyp then becomes a jellyfish again.
Thus, such stages keep repeating themselves so that if there is no danger, Turritopsis can practically live forever. “This is one of the most amazing finds,” said Australian jellyfish researcher Dr Lisa-ann Gershwin.
Jellyfish they weren’t exactly the same form as they were before, but still they didn’t die. Technically, it might be more correct to call them regenerating. But their unique life is the closest to immortality or eternal life among other animals.
