East Side Collective, a collaborative design studio of Co-Founder Tim Derrington and member Wilson Hanks, and Drophouse Design recently worked together to create a temporary installation for the Waller Creek Conservancy’s Creek Show in Austin, Texas.

“Deep Curiosity” is an illuminated arch that rises out of the water and surrounds a footbridge over Waller Creek to create the illusion of a never-ending circle that encourages imaginative thinking and an appreciation for the natural and man-made elements found in and around the same area.

The light installation consists of bent steel strips that have been welded and formed into a curved arch. Flexible neon LED light strips installed inside the arch change colors and create the light show over the Waller Creek Bridge.

The arch consists of sections that were created in a warehouse and later assembled on site in the water and over the bridge. Since the installation couldn’t affect the creek bed, steel braces were built into the creek sidewalls to stabilize and support the 30 foot structure, while steel wires anchor the arch to protect it from the elements.

The partially submerged circular shape combines reality with the power of illusion to encourage people to ponder and appreciate the complexity of the creek and celebrate the possibility of future perfection in the Waller Creek area.
