NEW YORK – There’s a quirky addition to the menu at a McDonald’s in Massapequa, as the COVID-19 vaccine was the “special” at the fast food restaurant on Wednesday.
“It seems strange that it’s at McDonalds. That they are vaccinating people at McDonald’s,” said customer Lucille Schlecht.
However, for McDonald’s owner Jonah Kaufman, the offer was nothing strange.
“We were trying to find different ways to vaccinate employees,” he said.
Kaufman has 700 employees at 11 McDonald’s locations on Long Island and would love to vaccinate as many as possible – and community members – in an effort to combat the ongoing pandemic.
With this in mind, he asked the Nassau County Mobile Vaccination Program to move into his restaurant.
“One model that works is to go to businesses, where there are people all the time,” said Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein, Nassau’s health commissioner.
The Nassau Health Department began shipping vaccines directly to businesses last month. The goal is to remove many obstacles that prevent workers and clients from receiving the vaccine.

This McDonald’s vaccination capsule was opened two days after Long Island saw more than 1,000 new cases of COVID-19 in a 24-hour span, a number second only to New York City.
However, the Nassau County health commissioner says 75% of those new infections are unvaccinated people, proof that he says vaccination is still the best way to fight the pandemic.
“People who are vaccinated generally don’t get very sick or die from it. So it’s working the way it’s supposed to,” Eisenstein said.
That may be so, but some customers prefer a fast food restaurant without the vaccine.
“I wouldn’t come here to get vaccinated. That’s the last place I would go,” said Schlecht, the client News 4 New York spoke to.
Still, Kaufman plans to run another pop-up vaccination site at another of his McDonald’s next month.
