The end of the 70s and then the 80s alone are at the origin of the greatest science fiction franchises, some of which are still active in the 7th Art. Alien, Terminator, Star Wars and many others have been delighting sci-fi fans for several decades. Another film was such a success at the cinema that it spawned a trilogy, a TV series and even video games. The trilogy has been available for free on TF1+ for a few days.

Since its launch in January 2024, TF1+ overshadows the market’s leading players, notably Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+, with a free offer (with advertisements) and a regularly renewed catalog. It is also possible to remove advertising spots by subscribing to a premium subscription at €5.99/month (or €59.99/year, or 2 months free). This SVOD service is distinguished by original programs including the Live Action adaptation of the anime Cat’s Eyes as well as films and series produced by third-party companies. This is the case of this science fiction film which delighted critics and won the hearts of spectators when it was released in 1985.

A cult SF film

Back to the Future is a science fiction film directed by Robert Zemeckisthe mind behind Forrest Gump (1994), Contact (1997) and more recently Pinocchio with Tom Hanks (2022) on behalf of Disney. Back to the Future of its original title with Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd in the main roles is based on an original screenplay imagined by the American filmmaker and Bob Gale. The impact of Back to the Future on popular culture and its success in theaters with 388.8 million US dollars collected at the box office for a budget of 19 million instantly made it a cult cinematographic work at the origin of a franchise still as famous almost 40 years after its debut on the big screen.

The synopsis of Back to the Future: In 1986, a teenager named Marty McFly lives with his parents, Lorraine and George, his brother, Dave, and his sister, Linda. He is the friend of Doctor Brown, considered a mad scientist, but who really invents a car to travel through time. Marty is involuntarily propelled back to 1955, without sufficient energy to return. He goes looking for Brown to help him solve this problem. But quickly, he realizes that his presence is not without consequences because it creates temporal paradoxes… – (TF1+)

A legendary saga

Back to the Future is a cinematic saga screened in theaters between 1985 and 1990 which includes three films – Back to the Future (1985), Back to the Future II (1989) and Back to the Future III – but not uniquely. The phenomenon is such that an animated series was released in 1991, a short film in 2015, several video games, a musical in 2020 and even an attraction located in the “Universal Destinations & Experiences” theme park. Despite rumors concerning a probable return of the saga to the cinema with Tom Holland in the lead, a rumor which he has since dismantled, the Back to the Future franchise is today at a standstill.
