This is Xiaomi’s Commitment to Sustainable Development

Xiaomi released the “2020 edition of the Sustainability Report” containing the company’s approaches and initiatives to support sustainable development in China and the global market. This report which contains more than 30 pages can be downloaded by visiting this link.

The report describes ongoing initiatives that Xiaomi has taken such as protecting the environment, CSR, and sustainable supply chain management, and other topics such as Xiaomi’s commitment to ensuring accessibility, data security, and user privacy.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun emphasized that since its founding in 2010, Xiaomi has been committed to making the world we live in a better place. In 2020, Xiaomi joined the United Nations Global Compact and is committed to the ten established principles of corporate responsibility.

“You can read about how sustainability at Xiaomi is managed from top to bottom, how we treat our employees and suppliers, how we interact with our community, and our response to global environmental challenges,” said Lei Jun.

A number of initiatives mentioned in the report include reducing the use of plastic by 60% in the packaging of the Mi 10T and Mi 10T Pro series. By the end of 2021, Xiaomi aims to achieve a higher percentage of plastic reduction in its product packaging for the European market.

At the same time, the report also describes Xiaomi’s success in presenting energy-saving capabilities as an important feature of more than 40 types of products. Xiaomi also highlighted its role in dealing with global issues such as being a partner in the development of an earthquake early detection system.

Meanwhile, the earthquake early detection system is new to China, and will soon follow in other countries. Xiaomi smartphones running the MIUI 11 operating system or above and Mi TV can give consumers an announcement in seconds when an earthquake occurs.

The earthquake warning contains information about the nearest emergency shelter, contacts who can be contacted, contacts to get medical services, as well as related information. Throughout 2020, the earthquake alert from MIUI has detected at least 29 earthquakes with a magnitude above 4.0.

Throughout 2020, Xiaomi also played an active role in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic by donating tens of thousands of FFP3 certified masks to the Italian government in March along with other countries such as France, England, and Poland.

When schools in Europe had to close in order to switch to online lessons, Xiaomi in Spain donated 1,000 smartphones to distribute to students. As of July 15, 2020, the Beijing Xiaomi Foundation has donated medical needs to 14 countries amounting to 5.9 million Yuan or approximately US$ 854,000.

In Indonesia, Xiaomi also plays an active role in the social sector by distributing 100,000 medical masks to the Task Force for the Acceleration of Handling COVID-19 and 10,000 medical masks to a number of hospitals through the Sahabat Beramal Jariyah Foundation.

Not only that, Xiaomi, which we know as a technology company with a variety of smart devices and the Internet of Things (IoT) to support lifestyles, has also distributed donations of Rp. 1 billion to ease the economic impact on society, which was distributed by Rumah Zakat and the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation.
